Our Story

Lockhart Legal was established on 1st October 2009 by Mason Lockhart on his return to New Zealand after working as a Senior Legal Advisor for Heineken International in Amsterdam. In February 2011, Lockhart Legal acquired the practice of Derek Cutting & Co and the practice shifted from Newton to 31-33 Great South Road, Auckland. Lockhart Legal then acquired the practices of David Thwaite in May 2012 and John Sellers in July 2015. In March 2021 the practice moved to Level 1, 7 Owens Road, in Epsom, Auckland.

In June 2017 Josh Muir joined the firm and injected a new commercial client base. Josh joined Mason as a director and shareholder of Lockhart Legal in April 2019.

In January 2023, the name of the firm was changed to Lockhart Muir to reflect this partnership.

In February 2023, Lockhart Muir acquired the practice of Horrocks Hampton, which resulted in the opening of a second office for Lockhart Muir in Takapuna, Auckland. Lockhart Muir then acquired the practice of Crosby & Associates in November 2024 and relocated the Takapuna office from Northcroft Street to 129 Hurstmere Road in December 2024.

The firm continues to enjoy strong organic growth thanks to recommendations and referrals from Mason and Josh’s loyal clients.

Prior to joining Lockhart Muir in April 2025, Tim was a partner at a respected boutique commercial law firm in Auckland. He brings over 15 years of experience in corporate, commercial, and property law, both in New Zealand and internationally.

Tim is dedicated to supporting New Zealand businesses through their growth and legal challenges, adopting a pragmatic, efficient, and client-focused approach. 

Outside of work, Tim plays competitive water polo and enjoys spending time with his wife and three young sons.

  • Advising owners on the management and subsequent sale of a $100 million Takapuna property portfolio.
  • Advising Singapore-based boutique hotel operator on the acquisition of New Zealand properties, valued between $3 million and $60 million.
  • Advising family office in managing and expanding their commercial property portfolio in St Lukes.
  • Advising owners of a specialist industrial park in Huntly on bespoke lease and license arrangements.
